Shadow
Lost in the dark
No smiles soar my spirit
The light bent to your grace and whim
‘Til one day you flew away and things changed
Now my face warms from stolen sun
Yet joy eludes my thoughts
I liked the cold

For Quadrille Monday at dVerse. The challenge is to write a poem using 44 words and I decided to do it in Rictameter Verse. The style is explained here, but it is a relatively simple form. However the trick, as always, lies in the execution. The only requirement is a strict syllable count: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 with the first line repeating as the last line. The style can be rhyming or not depending on how you feel. I went with non-rhyming and I hope you enjoy.

LOVE that “stolen sun,” especially.
Interesting form! Especially liked The light bent to your grace and whim…
We do have that tendency to warm ourselves in stolen sun… maybe it’s better to be cold sometimes.
Wow. Using a specific form with just 44 words,. Well done. 🙂
It is indeed strange how attached we get to the cold.
Beautifully done 🙂
I like the form and how you drew cold through the entire poem around the sun.
From shadow back to shadow: an interesting journey.
Love that stolen sun and cold shadow ~ Nice to meet you at D’verse ~
I hadn’t heard of Rictameter before – it’s an interesting form to combine with a Quadrille – and what a line: ‘Now my face warms from stolen sun’!

Great poem and I like this form.
I like the effect that this form has on the poem read aloud….building and lengthening the thoughts and then gradually fading back. Very interesting!
Combining it with that form is very effective!
