Golden Woman hides

There is a legend that the Ob-Ugric people, who live near the Konda River, a tributary of the Ob River, have concerning a “Golden Woman” (Zolotaya Baba). The legend claims that she is made of pure gold, and that no one has the right to see her or enter her cave full of treasures except for hereditary Guardians, signified by their red clothing and bearing gifts collected.

There is also another deity named Chooros nai anki, according to Paul Stonehill, who wrote “Mysteries of the Golden Woman of Ugra.” Chooros means “ocean”, “nai” means female deity, as well as fire or flame, while “anki” means mother. Stonehill believes that Chooros nai anki of Ob-Ugric legend is also the “Golden Woman”.

This haiku is for Carpe Diem #373: Ob River. Chevrefeuille went a little ahead on our trip with Paulo Coelho and put us in a bit of a hover-mode, so I took the opportunity to look up some legends of the Ob River and the surrounding area.
