This is the prompt for the Friday Fictioneers Challenge-write a story using only 100 words inspired by the prompt. My contribution follows.

***

The fool. Standing so close to the edge of the water. We evolved wings for a reason. We belong in the sky.

I swoop down, furious at his foolishness. My cries resonate over the crashing waves. He turns and spreads his wings, trying to make himself look bigger. Pathetic.

I peck and buffet with my wings, trying to save him. Trying. He fights me, never leaving the ground. The roar comes and I ascend. He never sees the metal beast that takes his life. We belong in the sky.

Monsters dwell on land.

  1. Dear Jeremy,

And in the sky, too, but that’s for another story, right. Good work.

    Aloha,

    Doug

    • Thank you for reading and commenting! Absolutely correct. Maybe I should give my gull his first experience with even bigger metal monsters than he’s used to, and that poach on his territory! I’m glad you liked the story.

  2. Dear Jeremy,

Interesting take on the prompt. Not sure which metal beast took his life. A plane perhaps? Or a car? I guess from a gull’s perspective monsters do dwell on the land.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

    • Thank you for reading! The metal beast I left to the imagination, although now that I think about it, if a gull knows metal he could describe a 4-wheeler racing down the beach 🙂 Thanks for commenting!

  3. Monsters…of the human kind?

  4. The metal beast wasn’t wearing a suit of armor, was he? Just kidding. 🙂
